West Kotawaringin is one of 13 regencies and one city in the province of Central Kalimantan with a capital Pangkalan Bun or by the nickname MANIS or in simple english SWEET which stand for (Minat, Aman, Nikmat, Indah dan Segar) or in simple english stand for (Interests, Safe, Delicious, Beautiful and Fresh).West Kotawaringin total area is 10 799 km2 or about 6.2% of the area of Central Kalimantan province.
The regency with a motto Marunting Batu Aji (Heading to the glory) is the gateway of Central Kalimantan Province in the west.And for that, the goverment has provided a transportation facilities whether it in land, sea, and air ,to make it easier for tourists to reach this places.
As the district originally a territory ruled by the Sultanate of Kutaringin since 1679,West Kotawaringin has its own cultural characteristics. Various objects of cultural heritage of the empire, and a multicultural heritage characterizes as well as an attractive asset for this regency.
The Imperial history is marked by the presence of a number of historical sites, such as the Istana Kuning Bukit Indra Kencana (rehabilitation outcomes after a fire in 1985) which is still standing strong in the middle of Pangkalan Bun town. So is the heritage of the Sultanate of Kutaringin in the form Kyai Gede Mosque, the tomb of the Sultan and others.
The main tourist attraction in West Kotawaringin is Tanjung Puting National Park. This ecotourism offers you a natural rainforest with itsdiverse flora and fauna, such as meranti , ramin , jelutung, gaharu and ulin. More than 200 birds,reptil, various mammals like proboscis monkeys, gibbons and sun bears, a types of large mammals such as deer, antelope, deer, wild boar and ofcourse, the main celebrity of this place, Orangutan.
Another tourist attraction that must be visited in this place is Bugam raya beach, a set of natural attractions located in the area in Kumai,with various beach like Kubu beach, Tanjung Keluang beach, Tanjung Penghujan beach, Keraya Beach, and Patih Mambang waterfall. For those of you a fans of snorkeling and diving, West Kotawaringin also offers a snorkeling , diving and wind surfing spot in Gosong Senggora with its clear sea water ,variety of sea fish and various corals.
